Oats Undrallu | Savory Oats Recipe

Savory Oats Dumplings.


One of the easiest and tasty breakfast I often use to make is Oats Undrallu. I even thought of posting this recipe earlier, but couldn't get pictures. This time I made it and captured without fail. I should point out here, this is one such simple savory dumpling  for those who are seeking healthy eats. It just takes only 15 minutes of your precious time to get done. A quick filling dumpling that can easily go in kids snacks box.
And I'm gonna try this for upcoming Indian festival - Vinayaka Chaturthi, as Lord Ganesha is fond of Undrallu /Kozhukkatai/Madak. Let's try something new with traditional. 



Preparation & Cooking Time :15 minutes

YIELD : 12 undrallu

Ingredients:

Oats - 1 cup(I used Quaker's Quick Oats)
Water - 1 cup
Red Chilli - 2 broken into small pieces
Fresh Grated Coconut - 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Split Urad Dal - 1tsp
Channa Dal - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - 5,finely chopped
Asafoetida a pinch
Salt To Taste
Oil - 1 tbsp

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a fry pan with oil. Once oil is hot add mustard, cumin, broken chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida one behind another.
  2. Pour a cup of water and required salt. Boil until bubbles heavily. Pour a cup of oats and mix well. Stir until the moisture gets evaporated. Add some grated coconut scrape and let it forms a big lump.
  3. Transfer to counter top and cool for a while. Divide the mixture into 12 equal lemon sized balls.
  4. Steam cook in the steamer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Serve hot and enjoy with Chutney.

Note:

  • The water should not exceed a cup, otherwise oats becomes mussy. Also the measurement of water varies with quality of oats you use.
  • For variation, add some finely chopped vegetables, to add color and more delicious.
  • It may sometimes dry, if you plan to eat after a while, so reheat and use for freshness.
