Vazhaipoo Vadai / Banana Flower Fritters | How to Use Vazhaipoo for Making Vada

Crispy fried banana blossom and lentil fritters.



Banana flower also known as vazhaipoo in tamil has very good medicinal properties. They have plenty of potassium, vitamin A, C and E. This lowers cholesterol and boost immunity. Its necessary to take banana flower in any form. Make this crispy banana blossom vadai and get all the benefits. It is healthy as well tasty with the combination chana dal and vazhaipoo. You can even steam cook to reduce oil intake.


Remove the thick stem and feathery transparent leaf from flowers as shown in the above picture.

YIELD : 10 vadai

Ingredients:

Banana Florets - 1 cup (from one medium sized flower) 
Chana / Bengal Gram dhal - 1 cup
Onion - 1 finely chopped
Green Chillies - 2
Ginger - 1/2" piece
Garlic - 1 clove
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp.
Hing -1/4 tsp.
Coriander leaves chopped - 3 tbsp.
Curry leaves - 1 length
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Salt - as per taste
Oil - to deep fry

Method:

  1. Peel the banana flower and separate the florets alone. (Only the florets are used for this recipe)
  2. Soak gram dhal for at least 2 hours.
  3. Drain the water completely. Grind it in a mixer coarsely.
  4. Add banana flower, onion, green chillies, ginger, garlic, turmeric powder, hing, coriander leaves, curry leaves, cumin seeds and fennel seeds to make a thick dough.
  5. Make equal sized balls out of this dough and press them a little to make a flat vada.
  6. Heat oil in pan to deep fry. Deep fry them in the oil in low flame for at least 6 to seven minutes on both sides .
  7. Alternatively you can also cook in a steamer to avoid the oil used for a more healthier version.
  8. Serve hot with chutney.

Note:


  • Don't forget to remove the thick stem and feathery transparent layer from each flower, before using for cooking. (it may cause stomach upset).
  • Clean the florets prior ahead and freeze it with ziplock to retain from discoloration. This also reduce preparation time.
