Vazhai Thandu Soup | How to Make Plantain Pith Soup



Hi all, back to blogging  after a short break. Enjoyed couple of weeks with family, friends, outing, trips, vacation and what not? It was a fun filled days. Today I come up with a post of soup. Soups are a real appetizers to begin a good meal. This plantain  pith soup is healthy, tasty and slurpy. The idea popped up from the road side soup stall in chennai. The hot soup served with crispy fried corn flakes and I love to slurp every sip with munching corn flakes.

Plantain has got so much health benefits. It cures ulcer, ease constipation, eliminates kidney stone, fights against infection. This version of soup is totally my own invention but I swear it tastes great. I tried it for many times from then. Also check out my vazhaithandu poriyal.

Preparation & Cooking Time : 20 - 25 Minutes

YIELD : 3-4 servings

Ingredients:

Plantain Pith - 4" piece
Rice Flour - 3 tsp
Red Chilli -  2 no.
Toor Dal - 2 tsp
Pepper Powder - 1tsp
Salt To Taste
Coriander leaves for garnish
Oil - 1 tbsp

Method:

  1. Slice the plantain pith and using your index finger remove the fiber between each slices. Finely chop.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure pan. Add chilli, chopped plantain pith, rice flour. Fry for few minutes.
  3. Add 2 cups of water and cook for 2-3 sounds or until soft cook.
  4. Wait for the pressure to release. Blend well until smooth and pass to strainer to extract the juice as much as possible.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to suit your taste. 
  6. Bring to boil and garnish with coriander, finely chopped plantain pith. Serve hot.

Note:


  • Mix a tbsp of corn flour in 3 tbsp of water and add to the soup for thickness at the final stage.
  • Add some grated carrot to give crunchy effect in the soup.
