Buddha's Delight - Gong Xi Fa Cai (CNY) Special Recipe

Hearty vegetarian saute in the delicious chinese sauce .


Buddha's delight is the vegetarian dish eaten by chinese and buddhists .  The popular vegetarian option in all chinese restaurant known as Luohan zhai. This is one of the most flavourful recipe that is traditionally prepared and eaten on the first day of Chinese New Year.
As per the information I gathered  Buddhists believe that meat should not be eaten on the first five days of the year. So every Buddhist family probably follow their own style and version, ingredients as per their choice. This is traditionally prepared with atleast minimum of 10 ingredients, but its not possible for me to collect all those ingredients. This Buddha delight may vary from cook to cook, house to house.

If you are one among world cuisine explorer then this is for you and a best vegetarian option for people like me. I should thank my Hubby who loves try to all cuisines and I took an opportunity to try this for the first time. A perfect recipe to post for this chinese new year.

YIELD : 2 Servings

Ingredients:

Firm Tofu - 150 grams , cut into cubes
Broccoli - 5-6 florets
Snow Peas / Mangetout  -100 grams
Carrot - 1 medium,cut into thick strips
Red Pepper  - 1/2 deseeded, cut into thick strips
Water Chest nuts- 3no peeled, sliced
Garlic - 2 cloves, Crushed
Salt To Taste
Chinese Five Spice Powder - 1/2 tsp
(Mixture of Cloves, Star Anise, Schezuan Peppercorn, Cinnamom, Fennel seeds and Salt)
Oil - 2-3 tbsp


For sauce:
Vegetable Stock- 1/2 cup
Light Soy Sauce - 3tbsp
Rice Vinegar - 1tbsp
Sugar - 1tsp
Sesame Oil - 1tbsp
Corn starch/ Corn Flour - 1tbsp
(dissolve with 1 tbsp water)

* Five powder is readily available in the market, if not prepare on your own.This can be used just like our Indian garam masala powder in many dishes to add spice.

Method:

  1. First combine all the sauce ingredients and keep aside. Sprinkle the five spice powder over the tofu and shallow fry until golden both sides. Drain in kitchen tissue and  keep aside.
  2. Now add garlic to the wok and stir fry for one minutes. Add the vegetables  broccoli, bok choy, snow peas, red pepper and carrot. Stir fry over low heat for few minutes. Sprinkle some water in between to avoid burning. Finally add water chest nuts and bamboo shoots.Season some salt and pepper.
  3. Pour the sauce into the cooked vegetables and bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  4. Serve the vegetables sauce with rice or noodles as per your preference.


Note: 

  • This tastes more like hot and spicy  soup from my personal experience. 
  • You can include cauliflower, bamboo shoot, baby corn. If possible add tbsp of vegetarian oyster sauce which readily  is available in market.
