Vazhaipoo / Banana Flower Chutney

Today's recipe is Vazhaipoo / banana flower chutney, it is very healthy yet simple and tasty too. This can be a good side dish for all south Indian Breakfast. Though it takes time for cleaning process I love to cook twice a month for its taste and health benefits. Try out using Vazhaipoo in Adai, chutney, vadai, paruppusili and many Variety of dishes.


Vazhaipoo / Banana Flower Chutney


YIELD – 2 Servings

Ingredients:

Vazhaipoo - 1 cup
Shallots / Small Red Onion- 5-6no.
Green chilli- 3-4no.
Bengal Gram Chal- 1 tbsp
Grated Fresh Coconut-1/2 cup
Tamarind Pulp- 1tbsp
Salt To Taste
Oil

For Seasoning:
Mustard Seeds-1tsp
Cumin Seeds- 1tsp
Split Urad Dhal- 1 tsp
Hing-1 tsp
Curry leaves- few springs

Vazhaipoo / Banana Flower Chutney

Method:

  1. Remove the red color bracts of vazhaipoo  and collect blossoms. Discard the Stamen(Kallan) and plastic like petal from all blossom.
  2. Roughly chop blossoms and soak in buttermilk water avoid discolouration(turn to blackish).
  3. Heat oil in a fry pan add Bengal gram dhal, hing and saute for a while.
  4. Now add shallots, green chilli and fry for a minute.
  5. Combine the vazhaipoo and continue sauting for about 2-3minute.
  6. Add coconut and turn of the flame.
  7. Cool the mixture and make a smooth chutney along with salt,tamarind pulp.
  8. Season the chutney and serve with Idly, Dosa.
Vazhaipoo / Banana Flower Chutney

Note:

If you are cooking in the morning, you can prepare the vazhaipoo the previous night for convenience.
Remove blossoms, discard kallan and plastic petal. Ziplock the blossoms and freeze it. Use it in an easiest way and save time.
