Rasam Powder

Any South Indian meal is incomplete without rasam. The main ingredient to prepare rasam is rasam podi(powder). There are many versions of rasam made with this rasam powder and the basic powder prepared will also be varied from house to house. Here is one of the method which i use to prepare regularly at home and its traditionally from my mom's kitchen. 

Rasam Powder

YIELD – 100grams

Ingredients:

Pepper Corns- 1/2 cup
Cumin Seeds-1/2 cup
Coriander Seeds- 3/4 cup
Dried Red Chilli- 4
Thoor Dhal- 1 tbsp
Curry Leaves- 2 springs dried
Fenugreek Seeds- 1 tsp
Gingelly Oil- 1 tsp

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a fry pan, add all ingredients one after another and roast till aromatic.
  2. Transfer to the plate and cool the mix.
  3. Using spice blender or mixer prepare this mix to a smooth powder.
  4. Store it in a air tight container for later use. The powder lasts good for 6 months.

Note:

  • Store it in the fridge for long lasting  freshness.
  • If you wish can add dried coriander stems, garlic pods with skin while preparing rasam powder.
