Nookal Kootu / Turnip Curry

Nookal /Gaanth Gobhi/Knol Khol/Italian Turnip   - I don't think so most of the people using this vegetable in their food habit. Just to give you all a gentle reminder about this veggie i posted nookal recipe today. Though being a starchy root vegetable, it is rich in Vitamin C and anti-oxidants. Highly helpful for people who are in diet to reduce obesity because of  low  calories. The leaves are also edible and eaten as greens for salad and will be posting recipes of  that soon.
Nookal Kootu / Turnip Curry


YIELD – 3 Servings

Ingredients:

Nookool - 3 roughly chopped
Bengal Gram Dhal/Chenna Dhal- 2 tbsp
Shallots-5 no
Red Chilli Powder- 1 1/2tsp
Coriander Powder- 2 tsp
Turmeric Powder-1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves- 1 spring
Salt To Taste
Oil- 1 tbsp

Wet Masala:
Jeera-1 tsp
Ginger -1 tbsp chopped
Garlic -1 tbsp chopped
Fennel Seeds- 1 tsp
Poppy Seeds- 2 tsp
Grated Coconut - 2 tbsp

For Seasoning:
Ghee-1 1/2 tsp
Garlic- 1 tbsp crushed
Cinnamon stick- 1/2"
Fennel Seeds- 1/2 tsp

Method:

  1. Wash and soak Chenna Dhal for half an hour in warm water.
  2. Wash,peel skin and roughly chop the Nookal.
  3. In a pressure pan heat oil, add all the wet masala ingredients one by one in order, saute well for few minutes and ground coarsely using mixer.
  4. In the same pressure pan heat  oil and add Nookal, chenna dhal, ground wet masala, all masala powder, salt and saute for 2 minutes.
  5. Cover the pressure pan and cook for 2 sounds and switch off the flame.
  6. Alternative you can boil turnip separately and cook with all masala in a deep pan(this will be little time consuming). 
  7. Season the curry and serve hot with steamed rice,  Roti N Paratha, goes well with any indian bread variety. 

NOTE:

For variation can try this same procedure with Cauliflower, Chayote.
