Indian flat bread with sweet lentil filling


Puran poli is a classic Maharastrian dish, also very famous in Gujarat. Some people make a sweet filling using chana dal /Coconut / toor dal. Puran Poli is known as Holige in Karnataka and Bobbatlu in Andhra Pradesh. This is a sweet served during auspicious occasions and festivals such as Holi, Padwa, Diwali. YIELD : makes 20 Puran Polis

Ingredients:
For Puran:
Toor dal - 2 cups soaked in water for 2 hours
Jaggery or Sugar - 2 cups  (adjust for sweetness)
Cardamom powder 1 tsp
Nutmeg Powder – 1/4 tsp
Saffron
Ghee
For Poli:
Wheat flour - 2 cups
Water As needed for dough
Oil

Method:
1.      Boil toor Dal in a pressure cooker till it turns soft. Drain out excess water until the dal is absolutely becomes dry and mash it.
2.      Heat the 2 tbsp of ghee and add boiled dal, jaggery/sugar and cook further. It really takes lot of time to cook, around 15 minuts. Keep stirring in between.
3.      Add cardamom powder, saffron, and nutmeg powder and mix well. Puran is ready. Keep aside to cool.
4.      Mix wheat flour, oil, water and make smooth dough. Knead very well. Use oil to knead.
5.      Form 20 balls of equal size of dough and 20 smaller balls of toor dal halwa.
6.      Place the toor dal ball in the centre of the rolled flour dough and close it to cover the filling completely. Roll out into a stuffed chapatti. Use dry wheat flour for dusting while rolling.
7.      Roast each poli on a hot, dry griddle. Roast both sides well adding a little ghee around.
8.      Serve warm with bowl of pure ghee.
