Horse Gram Rasam / Kollu Rasam

Horse gram is used for weight loss in ayurvedis medicine. It may also referred as Kollu / ulavalu / muthira / hurali in many Indian language. It may help with weight management and does have some good health benefits. Many recipes can be prepared using this horse gram and this rasam is one of my favorite soup. Why i call as soup it improves appetite level. Try this yummy mouth watering Kollu rasam.


Horse Gram Rasam


YIELD –2 Serving

Ingredients:

Horse Gram-2tbsp
Red Chilli-3no
Onion-1 medium chopped
Tomato-1 large chopped
Garlic-2no
Ginger-1inch piece
Pepper-1/4tsp
Cumin Seeds-1/2tsp
Coriander Seeds-1/2tsp
Tamarind Paste-1tbsp(dilute in 1cup water)
Turmeric Powder-1/4tsp
Curry Leaves-1tbsp finely chopped
Cilantro-1tbsp finely chopped
Salt-11/2tsp
Gingelly Oil 11/2tsp


For Seasoning:
Mustard Seeds-1/2tsp
Cumin Seeds-1/2tsp
Broken Redchilli-4no
Asefatodia-1/4tsp

Method:

  1. Pressure cook horsegram,red chilli,garlic,ginger,pepper,coriander,cumin with 1/2cup of water.
  2. Grind the pressure cooked horse gram into smooth paste and keep aside.
  3. Heat oil in a saucepan add onion,garlic and saute well.
  4. Add tomato,turmeric powder and stir well.
  5. Pour in diluted Tamarind water and bring it to boil.
  6. Simmer the flame, add ground horse gram paste,1cup of water and salt and cook for few minutes.
  7. Switch off flame when it starts to bubble up.
  8. Garnish with cilantro,curry leaves and season the rasam.
  9. Serve this yummy spicy rasam as a appitizer or with steamed rice.

NOTE:

If you wish replace tamarind with lemon juice. Add lemon Juice(1 tbsp) finally before seasoning.
